Exclamation "Content Updates" and what that means for your weekend.

Oi chaps and birds...

Alright, so.. with the many thunderous promises of "content updates" in recent history, we've seen Z-Coins, a make up artist for your lovely little looney toon, a sex changer (eshh), Z-Quest to be repeated until death do you lovingly part, and countless changes made to correct the many broken aspects of the game.
And, whilst these changes are so sincerely welcomed (especially the one where we can now change our winkies into hoo-hoo's), we've yet to see a PROPER "content update."

I do understand the grueling task of designing a brand new game, with a new platform, new G.U.I, etc... But, it seems only obvious to want to maintain your following while you have it, before you release your "monster" on the world..
We've seen this happen in the MMO community in the past, ie: a little game called Everquest with over 10 years in their back pocket and millions of players worldwide.. EQ2 was released... and due to the overwhelming unpopularity, EQ1 thrived and the developers were forced to maintain updates on the original platform... (which has proven quite successful).

Unfortunately for the Guild Wars community, this lucky little gem might not be available. Whilst promises of GW2 are quite remarkable and the trailer seems to have a general "thumbs-up," what's grabbing players and holding them to Guild Wars? The Answer: Attempts to fix bugs, exploits and breaks in the games foundation. Unfortunately, this just isn't enough when games like Aion (yes yes, same company), Dragon Age, etc etc are being released.

My Question to you (the general populous) is this, What can be done to grab the remaining community we have, and buckle them to their compu-chairs for hours at a time like this game did when it was released? CONTENT UPDATES of course!

Let's see some content being updated:

Armor: New armor for all classes. Retrofit Para, Derv, Rit and Sin armors into past crafters. Create new crafters for skins like Chaos, Eternal, Shadow, White Mantle, Shining Blade, etc. and make them available only after a complex string of tasks to be completed. This would take some of the strain off the ecto (since obby armor is awful for some classes anyway).
Some of the new PvP henchmen are prime examples of what GW armor could look like. (assassin and curse hench to be specific.)

Weapons: Eternal Blade? Voltaic Spear? Bone Dragon Staff? That's right kids, these items are popular... see class, if we make more skins, with better appeal, more people would stay tuned in to get their hands on the newest weapon skins.. hell, make weapon skins that are only available for a few months, then replace them with new ones???

Zones: PvE is dead. Unfortunately, this little fact is as widespread as H1N1, just not as cureable. People enjoy Elite Mission areas. UW, FoW, DoA, Deep, Urgoz. So make a new one every 6 months or so... not like you wouldn't just copy and paste some cells and change a color here and there for it anyway.. (Hey! what a vessel to deliver those new skins and armor ehh?)

Skills: Thanks to the skill balance team militantly changing and balancing the PvP aspect of the game, we're blessed with lovely little adjustments to the skills we have in our arsenal. But, not since EOTN have we seen a new skill. Which is understandable (again with the GW2 thing), but how many times have you boys and girls thought to yourself "Ahhh that would make a lovely skill wouldn't it?" Maybe a contest to design 10 or so new skills to be patched in. PvE and PvP skills could be separately considered.

All in all lads and lass.. let's see some love for GW1 before there's no community to transfer to GW2. =/

Your ideas are all very nice indeed, but the Live Team has stated time and again they simply don't have the time and resources to implement this kind of new content for GW1.

More, I don't think it is as easy as you think to copy and paste some old areas, slap some paint on it and taddaa! a new area. Even if this was possible for the Live Team to achieve, you would only get whining as the communities response, as seen with the reskinned armor/monsters/dungeons in EotN.

While all this would be nice, it's impossible to create in any reasonable timeframe.

Content Updates = ZQuest/Makeover NPC/Extra Stroage etc...

That's anet's promised content update to us.

EQ2 was good until they destroyed it. They destroyed it with one final blow in the TSO expansion by releasing more armors that basically (no bullshit) you had to be a hardcore grinder with thousands of hours of planned free time to get. If you didn't, no grouping for you (even in pre expansion areas!) because your armor 'sucks' even though before the expansion it was the best you could get. I quit eq2 and I know several others who did as well because of this. We didn't plan on wasting any more money or our lives grinding for this silly bullshit. I can only hope GW1 and 2 when it comes out will never become EQ2.

Now with GW1, more content updates will keep the game alive for 10+ years like SOE has managed with EQ1 and GW 1 will be the EQ1 we talk about 10 years from now. But I have a feeling even if they don't release content updates for GW1 I still see GW1 going on for a long time. GW1 has more popularity than you think among the crowd.

Guild Wars doomsday scenarios are fun. You are yet another single human being who thinks GW will not strive. I have news for you.

not really a matter of life and nostradamus fella... just saying.. HA barely has 2 districts daily.. and most outposts in PvE are ghost towns...
Guild Wars is, in fact, fizzling. Regardless of my lack of awareness to the popularity you speak of...

Now mentioned to be released in 2011. We've yet another year and a half to two years of GW1. Do you, monsieur, honestly think GW1 has enough content to support the remaining players still repeating missions and getting GWAMM on their second characters?

Play GW until you are tired of it, then move to a new game. New people are still starting to play. This is because the price has dropped, and people can pick up a 'no monthly fee' MMO for cheap and have no financial worries after the purchase. MMO is a misnomer though, as it isn't an MMO, it is similar in many ways, but not the same. If you have GWAMM and don't find any other interest in playing (PvP) then find a new game to play. The Live Team does not have resources to do regular skill balances for PvP balance, much less add new armor (which we have been told is a LENGTHY process), weapons, quests, etc.

They added new content for Halloween, and may add new content for Wintersday as well. PvE is getting updates, just look at UW. But the most important thing the Live Team should be working on is PvP balance to keep the people who would have a better reason to continue playing a reason to keep playing.

In a sense, I think you are asking them to give us free 'expansion' packs. They won't. They can't afford to.

Interesting Perspective.. But, as I'm currently replying to your nonsense whilst waiting (13 minutes and counting) in zaishen for an underworld match...

And assuming since you mentioned "new content" for halloween, I assume you're one of your aforementioned new players to the game.

As for your PvE update theory... if you would have read my initial post thoroughly you would realize that fixing a MAJOR flaw in the game (uwsc) which was causing large gouges in the game's economy.... isn't by any means an update... it's merely a necessity to keep the game operable.

The Live team... does have time, and does it often... balance skills in PvP.

And as far as "expansions" are concerned, I'd gladly pay 30$+ for any expansion. They HAVE released an expansion.... it's called ... Eye of the North.. But it came out before you started playing... so I assume you think it's part of the game.. But.. yes.. I do think they should release expansions... however small they would be.. It's the only way to keep the game alive..

It is an MMO (yes, it's a massive multi-player online RPG, by definition).

As far as them not being able to afford it.... They're currently working on releasing a NEW game, with a new engine, new cell textures, new UI, new damage packet concepts, along with new crafting and armor engines. They have the money, and the manpower... but would prefer to use it to the new game's advantage.. which is understandable (as I mentioned previously).... My point is... this is a mistake... imo.

Thanks for the input tho matey.

The last "content" was the BMP. I had hoped the inserting of Dhuum via the waiting game would offer new content, but they managed to delay and screw that up too.

The BMP was cool, the skins are nice, really great for hero weapons, being q9 and inscribable. But being customized and insanely easy to obtain, basically offered nothing in terms of economical value, shy of possibly boosting the demand for inscriptions and mods for a few months after it came out.

Really cool concept though, bringing the past events into the game and offering "faction" based skins. (Tengu, Charr, Mursaat, and Undead.)

GG Anet for BMP.

New content for Halloween included 4 quests. These quests included new skills. A 5th quest was also added, but I don't include that with the Halloween event since it has yet to be completed. And I'm hardly a new player, as I've played the game daily for 4 years now.

Look into what Anet calls Guild Wars. They don't call it an MMO, they call it a CORPG. Cooperative Online Role Playing Game. They purposefully didn't use MMO due to the 'instance' setup of the game. Sure, large numbers of people play, but you are limited to playing with 7 other people outside of AB (and that is 3 other people in truth, but with 2 other teams) or Deep/Urgoz. Vizunah and Unwaking also give you larger groupings, but again, that is still very limited.

GW2 may not succeed. We don't know yet, as it hasn't been released, and we don't even know many details about how it will play yet. But saying they should put more time into GW1 and neglect GW2 is silly. If GW2 fails, and they can continue to make money through GW1, they may do things for GW1. But until they have a reason to neglect GW2, they should put all possible effort into making it a good game. People want NEW stuff (evidenced by this topic). Keeping GW1 going is not providing new stuff, even if it is new to GW. And yes, I'd pay for more expansions if they made them and kept the same concepts as they already have used. But I'd rather not loose GW2 quality to get old GW1 stuff added. The only revenue they get from GW1 is new accounts being purchased or microtransactions for it (character slots, storage, makeovers, etc.).

No one's saying neglect GW2...

But.... as I stated, 2011 release date. Almost 2 years until GW2 hits shelves.
And as much as I appreciate your enthusiasm mate, it's really not a debate... it's more of a notation. Guild Wars is simply in decline. Which was my original statement. So take it as you will pal... But dead game is dead. And without love, in some form or fashion, it will only continue to die out more-so than it already has.

Ah, but they could have made the update simply by sprinkling the UW with a monster designed to beat permasins using existing skills (they exist). They've done it before - that's where the Dying Nightmares came from (no ingame explanation), that's where Kephket came from (a brief lore explanation). Instead, we get four new quests with a fifth on the way, a monster with new skills, and new skills to use in the quests.

But the frequency is dropping as time gets diverted to other projects - it's recently become bimonthly instead of monthly, for instance.

If it's a mistake, it's theirs to make. Ideally, of course, they'd be able to do both, and I certainly wouldn't complain if it was announced that they were going to work on, say, another god realm, but they've set their priorities - and they may have done so with knowledge that we don't have.

they (live team) said that they have big plans for next year, which means either they will do too many things at the same time (like last content update) or gw2 will be "nearly" finished in some months that anet is able to naturally increase the live team's headcount.

either way, gw is finished for many people, but i wouldn't call it dead, since there are still a lot of people playing it. i wouldn't be concerned if a game, even an mmo, is constantly losing people. in fact this adds to the game as once you saw everything, you won't be bothered with endless rehashs.

the last update was hopefully to bring gwen weapon skins to pvp, but they screwed that also, they just added nightfall/faction weapon skins that tolkano didnt offer before, and gwen armors not weapons..., id like to see gwen weapons in the pvp system (bds/emerald blade/eternal blade etc. etc.)
whould love to see all that stuff but they probably wont do it even for gw2

That is something I have always wondered about. If they ever had plans to add in Dawyna, Lyssa and Melandru's realms prior to deciding to drop gw1 and focus on gw2, or if they just never intended to.

As for content updates, I wish they would have kept doing the design a weapon stuff.

I'm not sure that's a question that's ever been answered. Linsey has implied that she wouldn't turn down such a project if she was given the resources, but that doesn't say anything about whether it was ever intended to be part of the general scheme of things.

I could've sworn I posted here about how ArenaNet did not develop Aion. But, that thread was a couple pages long, must've been a different one.

Anyways, ArenaNet didn't develop Aion, that was done by one of NCsoft's weeaboo departments.
